How to replace rear indicator/brake/sidelight/reverse bulbs and/or
lenses/ backing plate on a bug
Tools Needed: Cross-head screwdriver
Parts Needed: Replacement bulb(s) (new lens/ backing plates if you're replacing it)
Time taken:
A minute
You can usually tell when an indicator has gone (apart from looking
obviously) as the relay and the light in the speedo will flash quicker than
normal on the affected side. Check sidelights visually. Brakes - if you're on
your own, reverse up to a wall or garage door at look for the reflection when
you press the pedal.
Indicator and reverse light bulbs are single filament.
The combined sidelight/brake one is a twin filament.
This procedure is shown
on a late bug 'tombstone' rear light.
60's bugs and 1200's have an oval shaped rear light held on with 2 screws
1303's have a large circular unit known as a 'elephants foot'
Very early bugs (pre '61) are completely different.

Probably one of the the easiest things to do on a bug.
- Make sure the ignition & light switch is off.
- Using the screwdriver remove the 3 cross head screws (2 if pre '68
style) holding the rear lens on and remove together with the chrome trim
ring.
- You will see 2 or 3 bulbs positioned vertically, shown below The top
bulb is the indicator. The middle bulb is the combined brake and sidelight.
The lowest one, if you have one (like the one in the pics - not all do) is
the reverse light.
- To remove a bulb, press it back into its holder and twist.
- If you want to check the connections to the bulbs are clean or replace the
reflector, you need to access the back of the bulb holders. Undo the 2 cross
head screws holding it to the body and unclip it from the slotted hole at
the top.
- If the connections / terminals are dirty / rusty clean them with some
emery paper or replace the spade connectors.
- If you are removing the reflector unit note the position of the wires
before removal - these can vary from the colours shown above due to repairs
/ modifications etc.
- Now check the operation of the lights before replacing the lense.
At this point it is worth rustproofing the bottom of the light bases as
these rot, so put some waxoyl in the base of the unit where it joins the
wing.
- Refit parts
