This procedure is the same for all type 1 engines i.e. 1200, 1300, 1500 & 1600 engines
The oil drain plate is the circular plate in the middle of the engine (above). You will notice that there is a big bolt in the middle and six 10mm nuts spaced around the edge.
Take a 19mm spanner or socket and loosen the middle bolt until you can turn it by hand. Place the bowl underneath this bolt and continue to loosen it until it comes out and the oil starts flowing. Make sure you don't drop it it the oil. Be careful as the oil can be very hot.
When the oil has drained out, take a 10mm spanner/socket and undo the six bolts holding the oil drain plate in place. Keep the bowl in place to catch any more oil that comes out and remove the plate.
Underneath you will see (or it will have come out with the drain plate) a circular gauze filter - this is the oil strainer. Remove this also.
Next, wash the gauze filter with the paraffin or white spirit and leave it to one side to dry.
Now remove any trace of the old gasket from the oil drain plate and the bottom of the engine from where you removed the plate. Make sure these surfaces are clean.
Remove one of the two circular card gaskets from the oil change kit. Rub a little fresh oil on both sides and fit to the bottom of the engine so that one of the 10mm bolts that come out of the bottom of the engine goes through each space in the gasket.
Next, reinsert the oil strainer so that the bolts match again. Now, take the second gasket and do the same as the first but place it so that it goes between the oil strainer and the plate. Then refit the plate using new copper washers that came with the kit.
Nearly there- look at the drain plug that you took off first to let the oil out. Remove the washer and replace with a new one from the oil change kit and refit it to the engine.
Lastly, fill the engine with 2.5 litres of oil. Check the dipstick and top up if necessary. Run the engine for a few minutes to check for leaks and then check the dipstick again.
