1972 Bug: History

The Search

This was bought in June 1994. As soon as I had finished school, the search was on. As luck would have it, that weeks local paper had two beetles advertised. We rang up, both were still for sale at around similar prices. The first one was in a terrible state, full of poor welding and hastily sprayed over (they hadn't even bothered to grind down the welds). Two seconds was all it took to decide  and it was off to the next one.
It was a 1972 L-Reg 1300 stocker finished in VW Kasanrot red (L30B), which looks like cross between tomato red and bright orange. This was in very good nick only having one previous owner who had owned the car for most of its life, the present owner only having had it for eighteen months and was selling it to finance a fastback purchase. The car had been Dinitrol treated when new and came with a very comprehensive service history starting from day one to the present. A quick poke around revealed surprisingly little rust, slight paint mis-matches where four new wings had been added and a stock interior. Two days later, after some bargaining, it was sitting on the drive outside.

Over the years, various bits were done - mainly running gear etc. The engine died in the 4th lane of the motorway going round the bottom on Manchester whilst on the way to get a new engine fitted. I brightened up the interior with some offcuts of cloth and fitted some extra gauges and mk1 golf front seats. Discs from a 1500 were also added. After starting work I gradually began collecting all the bits needed for the resto
