1302 Eurolook project
Brakes etc
Lee from Volksmagic had been working on a
custom rear disc brake set-up for the bug. This involved aftermarket rear discs,
specially machine brackets and floating rear callipers off a new beetle which
also incorporated a handbrake. Lee was keen to see how things were progressing
and to help, so he & Darren came over for the day to help me with building the
chassis - much appreciated! As the car was being built to be driven it was
decided to go for new bearings & cv's etc all round, rather than cutting corners
and having the consequences later. Lee supplied most of the new parts for the
project too. Whilst Lee set to work on the rear running gear we installed the
freshly painted and re-oiled gearbox. This was the original from the car and
unknown as I'd never driven it but as the '02 was an 's' model it was the higher
ratio box so it was decided to risk it rather than sourcing a new replacement
(the gamble paid off too - the 'box is in excellent condition). As they were
floating calipers an extra flexi pipe and associated brackets were custom made
and the handbrake cables needed modifying. Once the disks etc were fitted, we
moved onto the front end, installing the pedals, master cylinder, clutch cable
and some solid brake pipes.
The wheels are 17x 7.5 Borbet LS which Rich and I
came across looking around various breakers yards and alloy wheel shops. They
have the perfect offset to enable stock wings to be used (didn't like the look
of the oversized wings) and not cause any problems with the inner wings. Some
headscratching was needed to work out the offset required and some mates lent us
various aftermarket alloys so we could establish what was best. They were also
not much more expensive than most aftermarket ' off the shelf' alloys usually
fitted to bugs. These were in modern vw / audi stud pattern so Lee machined the
new discs to the correct pcd. The rear wheels were fitted and to finish we sat the
body on the pan to get an idea of how it would look once complete.
